The most powerful and most affordable half-ton diesel truck.

That’s big news from Chevy as they prepare to launch their 2019 Silverado 1500 with the all-new 3.0-liter Duramax diesel.

“The all-new, Duramax 3.0-liter inline-six turbo diesel will deliver an SAE-certified 277 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque, more than any other light-duty, full-size truck diesel available,” Chevy announced this week.

The 3.0-liter Duramax is priced the same as the 6.2-liter V8 which is $2,495 over the 5.3-liter V8 or $3,890 more than the 2.7-liter turbo “making the 3.0L Duramax the most affordable light-duty diesel engine on the market,” Chevy notes.

By comparison, the 2019 Ford F-150 equipped with the 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel produces 250 horses and 440 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2019 Ram 1500 powered by the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel (available third quarter) is rated at 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque.

Chevy’s all-new Flint-built Duramax 3.0-liter diesel, which will be paired with a Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission, is expected to be an efficiency leader in the Silverado lineup.

More information, including fuel economy and towing capacity, will be released as the truck nears its dealership launch this summer.

GM has been investing heavily in diesel powertrains. In 2015 the automaker announced a $263 million investment for its Flint Engine Operations for a new engine line which includes the 3.0-liter Duramax. With diesel offerings on Equinox, Cruze, Colorado, Express, Silverado 1500 and Silverado HD, no other brand offers more diesel models or diesels in more segments than Chevy.

Other engine options for the 2019 Chevy Silverado:

  • Updated versions of Chevy’s 3-liter and 6.2-liter enginesequipped with industry-first Dynamic Fuel Management featuring 17 different modes of cylinder deactivation.
  • An all-new, advanced 7-liter turbo enginethat replaces the 4.3-liter V6 as the standard engine on the high-volume Silverado LT and new Silverado RST, expected to offer 22 percent more torque, greater fuel efficiency and a stronger power-to-weight ratio than the current model.
  • Proven 4.3-liter V6 and 5.3-liter V8 engines return for model year 2019 to offer customers the most affordable trucks in the Silverado lineup.
