CAT to shutter S.C. reman transmission plant

Caterpillar has announced it will close a remanufacturing plant in Summerville, S.C., putting 280 people out of work.

“Over the last few years, the company has worked to position the facility to be more competitive,” the Peoria, Ill.-based company said via a release. “However, it has concluded that the Summerville facility is not viable as a long-term operation.”

Caterpillar spokeswoman Barbara Cox told the Post and Courier the company began to look at the business after some of the plant’s main customers went with other suppliers.

A complimentary hydraulic business also located in Summerville will also close, the newspaper reported.

The company says it plans an “orderly ramp down of production” to prepare for the factory’s closing.
