by Bruce W. Smith

Cummins is a world supplier of diesels in all shapes and configurations, and many aren’t seen here in the States.

One such engine is ISF2.8L Cummins Turbo Diesel, which has been used for several years in Europe for commercial applications.

In Cummins quest to expand its engine business they have partnered with Nissan to make the 2.8L U.S.-compliant, and meet the stricter emissions regulations of the Tier 2, Bin 2 requirements.

According to our sources, the revamped diesel, which is being tested in Nissan Frontiers, features a unique diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), selective catalytic reduction system (SCR), and diesel particular filter (DPF).

All of the air pollution control systems are combined and mounted to the engine, rather than farther down in the exhaust stream like the 5.0L V8 slated for production in the next generation Nissan Titans.

The engine also has a water-to-air intercooler to maximize power and performance.

We expect highway fuel economy of this engine to be closing in on 30mpg when installed in a mid-size pickup such as the Frontier running an 8-speed automatic.
