aFe Rear Diff Cover For GM HD
Project Big Red rear differential upgraded with new cover for larger lube capacity and heavier duty protection from off-road encounters
by Bruce W. Smith
Hard knocks are expected to happen when a service truck is being used in heavy construction work. It’s just part of the work environment in road, bridge and site development work where rock, ruts and debris are just part of the natural terrain.
So we are taking that into consideration as we ready our 2008 GMC 3500HD Dually for the field.
One item of concern is the rear differential cover. The lightweight steel OE cover is fine for normal use. But heavy construction isn’t normal use.
We are also concerned about the build up of heat in the differential because the truck is carrying more than 2,000 pounds of service body and accessories day in and day out.
Both diff concerns are readily addresed by upgrading the rear diff cover with an aFe diff cover (retail $290).
This differential cover is constructed out of durable die-cast A380 aluminum with reinforced ribs and wrinkle black powder-coating with machined fins for maximum strength and styling. This cover comes with all necessary hardware and includes an O-ring for a leak-free seal.
The benefits of the upgrade:
- 5 quart lube capacity
- Built-in internal/external cooling fins
- Magnetic drain/fill plug:
- Oil Level Sight Glass
