Delivery driving in Asheville, N.C. can be challenging enough with its older, narrow streets packed with curious tourists. Then there are the hillside roads that twist and turn and the occasional bear–yes, bears.

If there was ever an excuse not to make a delivery, a UPS driver certainly had one in this historic and charming community where cutting edge art, the Biltmore Estate and art deco architecture often make the headlines. But now it’s bears.

Asheville resident Marcy Lanier posted her UPS driver’s note on Facebook which has since gone viral. The ‘Sorry we missed you note’ reads simply: “Bear in driveway.”

Lanier took it all in good humor. “Like I say. Only in Asheville! :)” she posted on Aug. 24.

Lanier told local ABC affiliate WLOS, “We get bears all the time.”

Residents have since become even more concerned about increased bear activity in the area following a deadly attack on a family’s dog.

On Friday a bear entered a home in the Black Wood community scaring a mother and her children, according to foxcarolina.com. The mother credits the dog for protecting her family by leading the bear outside the home where it was mauled to death. The bear had entered the home through an open door.

Wildlife experts in the area say that as the weather continues to cool black bears are becoming more active as they seek out more food for hibernation.
