The GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado top the EPA’s list for the most fuel efficient pickup trucks for model year 2016.

Both trucks, which the EPA classifies as “small pickup trucks,” are powered by a Duramax 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission which produces a combined (highway and city) 25 mpg rating.

On its website, Chevy took advantage of the EPA’s recent rating by labeling Colorado as “America’s most fuel-efficient pickup.”

The leader of the pack for standard pickups, the Ram 1500, took second place with an impressive 24 mpg combined thanks to its popular 3.0-liter EcoDiesel, the only truck engine to make Ward’s Auto top 10 list for 2015.

Conversely, the least efficient small pickup truck for 2015 is the Nissan Frontier 4WD. It’s 4.0-liter engine, couple with a 5-speed automatic transmission, only generates 17 mpg combined.

The least efficient standard pickups for 2015 are the Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra. No matter the automatic transmission pair-up, both trucks could only squeeze out 15 mpg combined thanks to a thirsty 5.7-liter gas engine.
