The GMC Sierra 1500 was named the 2016 Texas Truck Showdown Towing Champion following a series of tests conducted recently in Houston by editors from cars.com, pickuptrucks.com and mrtruck.com.

The Sierra 1500 SLT test truck, equipped with an optional 6.2-liter V8 and 8-speed automatic transmission, beat out Ford, Ram, Toyota and its sister truck, the Chevrolet Silverado. It took over a week to put the trucks through 20 towing tests.

“This recognition validates everything GMC stands for: powerful truck capability uniquely coupled with premium appointments and refinement,” said Sierra Marketing Manager Stuart Pierce. “Combined with bold new styling for 2016 and its crafted interior, the Sierra handles the toughest tasks in the utmost comfort.”

The Sierra had the largest engine of the trucks and also the best fuel economy. Trucks competing against the Sierra for the 2016 Best Light-Duty Truck for Towing award include: the F-150 Lariat with 3.5-liter EcoBoost, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ with 5.3-liter V8, Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn with the 5.7-liter V8 and Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition with the 5.7-liter V8.

Sierra also scored high for its new Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. A five-part series outlining the evaluation starts today at www.pickuptrucks.com.
