Toyota is stepping up truck production in the hopes of keeping up with greater demand.
Saturday production is now underway at the automaker’s plant in San Antonio for the full-size Tundra and mid-size Tacoma. Tacoma dominated mid-size truck sales during 2015.
Mickey Anderson, National Toyota Dealers’ Advisory Council Chairman, told autonews that the company’s record truck sales has led to a shortage of new Toyota pickups and that the company is taking steps to meet increased demand.
In addition to increased production in San Antonio, Toyota’s Mexico plant will soon be building more Tacomas to help with the shortfall.
“Clearly, American consumers prefer more trucks,” Anderson, president of Baxter Auto Group in Omaha, Neb., told autonews.
