Ford has been testing other OEM’s mid-size trucks at its secret proving grounds in Australia, according to foxnews.com.

Reporters invited to recently celebrate the 50th anniversary of the company’s You Yangs Proving Grounds, where the Ford Ranger was originally engineered, were not allowed to use their cameras, but still got an eyeful.

While there, a News Corp Australia reporter said he spotted a Chevy Colorado (U.S. version) “doing laps of the high speed oval test track, while a U.S.-spec Toyota Tacoma sat in a parking lot nearby.”

The 2011 model year Ford Ranger was the last produced for the U.S. market. Another version of the truck was produced for other countries. That version does not meet U.S. safety and emissions requirements.

Rumors of a Ranger and Bronco rebirth in the U.S. continue to generate headlines. Bloomberg News and The Detroit News both reported in August that a person familiar with Ford’s plans had confirmed that the company would be reintroducing both vehicles to the U.S. market as soon as 2018.
