GM 4Ă—4 1500 Pickups and SUVs With Automatic Transfer Case Get Recall Notice
General Motors has issued yet another recall, this time to update software in 2014-2015 1500 4x4s with the automatic transfer case (RPO NQH).
According to a notice sent to GM dealers, 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicles, and 2015 GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe vehicles, an electrical signal short may cause the transfer case to shift to neutral without the driver’s input.
If the transfer case switches to neutral while the vehicle is parked and the parking brake is not in use, the vehicle may roll away increasing the risk of injury to bystanders says the NHTSA recall notice.
In addition, if the transfer case switches to neutral while the vehicle is being driven, the vehicle would lose drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
Last month GM sent a letter to dealers stating the problem and the fix: re-programming the software that controls the transfer case module.
The recall (#14192) fix, which is free, is expected to begin in early August 2014 and owners of the affected vehicles will be notified.
Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), or 800-462-8782 (GMC). GM’s number for this recall is 14192.
