FedEx and UPS announced today that they would be suspending services in areas impacted by extreme winter weather.
As of 11 p.m. EST tonight FedEx Freight locations in 11 states will be temporarily closed along with 10 FedEx offices in three states. Please refer to an updated FedEx list of closures by visiting the web page for FedEx Service Alerts.
Regarding the deadly polar vortex, which has already been blamed for at least eight deaths, FedEx issued the following statement:
FedEx is closely monitoring the winter storm in the Northern and Midwest regions of the U.S. Contingency plans are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of our team members and to minimize the effects of the storm on service. Major winter storms can cause pickup and delivery delays and disruptions for FedEx customers. FedEx will be prepared to provide service to the best of our ability in areas affected by the storm and as local conditions allow.

UPS reported on its service alert web page that challenging winter conditions would affect service in Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and North Dakota. Weather conditions in Louisville, Kentucky, caused a disruption to operations at the UPS Worldport hub in the United States. As a result, some shipments may experience unavoidable delays.
Contingency plans are in place and UPS is working to move shipments to their final destinations as quickly as conditions permit. Track your package for the status of your shipment and continue to check here for the latest information on service delays.

Severe winter weather is impacting areas of the Midwest. There will be no pickups or deliveries today in the affected areas.
