Another Ford Ranger prototype was spotted—this time with what sounded like a diesel engine under the hood.
Of course, this would make complete sense since Ford’s archrival, GM, has won over plenty of midsize truck fans with its diesel-equipped Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. Overseas, Ranger has been made available with either a 2.2- or 3.2-liter turbodiesel engine. (But alas…the continent that once praised the diesel so much for its power and fuel efficiency, is now taking steps to ban them.)
Car and Driver’s photographer, who took plenty of pictures of the pickup including the undercarriage, got into some hot water with an engineer who threatened to fight him. The photog reported that the engine sounded like a diesel–but maybe that was the engineer growling?!
A lifted stance, beefed up suspension, wider fenders and a new grille hint at a Ranger Raptor…maybe.
You may recall that in June, CarAdvice in Australia published spy photos of an offroad Ranger. That truck—shown below—looks very similar to the one posted by Car and Driver.
Keep in mind that Ford registered two trademark names in Australia: Ranger Raptor and Ranger FX4. Ranger is expected to return next year as a 2019 model.
