Banks’ Derringer tuner adds 81-hp, 144 lb.-ft. torque to GM’s 6.6-liter Duramax

Banks Power recently announced the availability of its Derringer performance inline tuner for 2020 GM heavy-duty trucks equipped with the 6.6-liter L5P Duramax diesel engine.

Banks reports that the Derringer adds a tested best-in-class horsepower gain of 81 horsepower and a best torque gain of 144 lb.-ft. Inspired by the compact but formidable handgun of the same name, the Derringer is designed to be an easily-concealed plug-and-play microcomputer control module that’s easy to install.

Exclusive features include Banks AutoRate which provides optimum power by reading the vehicle’s RPM, speed, gear, exhaust gas temperature, coolant temp and more off the OBD-II diagnostics port.

“This data is utilized to provide both maximum performance as well as increased safety and reliability,” Banks states in a press release. “With built-in Banks TransCommand, the Derringer protects the transmission with intelligent power delivery for slippage prevention and smooth shifting.”

Banks ActiveSafety adds a layer of protection with its self-monitoring hardware that provides automatic bypass should the unit loose power or malfunctions. This ensures power is always available to avoid dangerous limp-home conditions.

In addition to reading over a dozen points of OBD-II data, the Derringer calculates Banks exclusive parameters and makes adjustments when necessary including compensating for altitude. Various power levels are available.

Duramax owners can choose from two Derringer systems: Derringer with iDash DataMonster or Derringer with iDash SuperGauge. Both allow for up to six power levels through the iDash and monitor up to 300 critical engine and tuner parameters, many patented, as well as clear trouble codes, check emissions readiness and initiate a DPF regen.

The iDash DataMonster allows for simultaneous recording of up to 100 parameters on the included microSD card. The ultra-compact instrument can mount in an A-pillar, on the windshield, or in any 2-1/16-inch (52mm) standard gauge hole and displays 5 custom pages of up to 8 parameters each on its color LCD.

Derringer 2020 L5P feature:

  • Adds up to 81 hp and 144 lb.-ft. torque
  • Six on-the-fly power levels controlled via iDash
  • Tunes dynamically thanks to its OBD-II connectivity
  • Maximum power under any driving condition
  • Banks AutoRate, Banks TransCommand, and Banks ActiveSafety ensure safe power to engine and drivetrain
  • Plug-and-play, small form factor, does not leave a footprint on ECM
  • Connect with other Banks devices including sensor modules and forthcoming PedalMonster throttle booster
  • 49 state emissions compliant, CARB compliance in process

Derringer with iDash DataMonster (Part No. 67103) is $859. Derringer with iDash SuperGauge (Part No. 67102) is $739. Both are now available via Banks Power authorized dealers and bankspower.com/l5p.
