Hmmm…are the robots revolting in New Orleans?
Errant traffic cameras in the Big Easy seem to be taking on the role of the mischievous HAL 9000 from A Space Odyssey as residents there continue to receive speeding tickets in the mail for parked vehicles.
Donald Schulz says that one traffic camera in particular has issued at least 10 speeding citations for his pickup, despite the fact that it’s been legally parked along Canal Boulevard.
“It’s a nuisance; I’ve had to take time out of my day several times and go down there and correct the situation,” Schulz told Fox News. “It got so bad that years ago I even had a [telephone] number of a person [in the traffic violations office] so that if I called them directly I didn’t have to go down there.”
Schulz’ family members have also been wrongfully ticketed after parking near his home. The camera is positioned on a median and apparently has been mistaking speeding cars for parked ones.
Schulz reports that the problem is not confined to his neighborhood. He said during one visit with city officials in 2013 he overheard another resident complaining about the same problem.
Fed up with the fallible cameras, Schulz approached media after getting yet another ticket on April 5. The city said a contractor who manages the cameras will be retraining staff to avoid sending out false tickets. However, after dealing with the same mistake for years, Schulz isn’t so sure that he’s seen his last fake ticket.
“I have no faith in the system to be perfectly honest with you,” he said. “If I’m guilty I’ll gladly pay it, but this is getting to be a nuisance! If it were in front of the mayor’s house he’d take care of it.”
