At least five people were killed and others injured after a semi drove through a center guardrail today on Interstate 10 in Southern California and crashed into oncoming traffic.

One of the responding officers told The Los Angeles Times that it was one of the worst crashes he’s seen. Debris and overturned vehicles covered the highway.

The west bound truck had been carrying a load of concrete in Rialto, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, when around 1 p.m. it broke through the center divider and smashed into another truck and four cars, according to Fox 11. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The accident shut down both east and west bound lanes of I-10. Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes. Some were filmed driving in a nearby, restricted area where they got stuck in the sand.
