Motor Trend Channel’s Diesel Power Challenge 2017 is back and it didn’t take long for the first contestant to hit over 1,000 hp on a dyno in a street legal diesel truck. Though these workhorses are paired up with nitrous, rules require that they have to be street legal to qualify.
The weeklong ‘torture test,’ which kicked off Monday features six competitive events and 10 trucks. The higher altitude in Denver is an adjustment for some of the trucks.
“We push Cummins-, Duramax- and Power Stroke-powered well beyond their limits in this search for the ultimate street-legal diesel truck and driver,” Motor Trend writes in its YouTube description.
Once you start watching, though, it’s hard to stop.
Take for instance McCoy Black’s 1995 Dodge Ram 2500. Black hit 1,255.8 hp and 2131.8 lb.-ft. of torque in his first ‘pull’ on the dyno.
“On first pull we stayed down on jet sizes—only like a 99 full throttle jet. We were expecting nowhere near that, honestly. Knowing that, we’re almost scared to put a bigger jet in now,” Black told Diesel Power Challenge host Brian Lohnes.
