Trucks were used as security barriers for the time at the Boston Marathon Monday.
Dump trucks and other heavy equipment were parked on side streets along the 26-mile route from Hopkinton, Mass. to the finish line in downtown Boston.
Boston Police reported that the decision to use trucks as barriers follows attacks on crowds abroad in which vehicles were used by Islamic terrorists to mow down and kill bystanders in Berlin, London and more recently, Stockholm.
“Unfortunately, that’s a new tactic that ISIS is promoting in their magazines and whatnot,” Boston Police Commissioner William Evans told wcvb.com.
Security has been heavy following the 2013 terrorist bombing at the Boston Marathon in which three people were killed and 260 injured. The route features cameras, fenced-off security zones and police snipers positioned on rooftops.
Evans, a runner himself, participated in Monday’s marathon for the first time since 2013. The 58-year-old finished the 26.2-mile run in three hours and fifty minutes.
The Boston Marathon is a historic event for the city which attracts massive crowds and talented athletes from around the world. The first race was held there in 1897.
