Westport Innovations said Thursday rumors of the demise of its 15 liter LNG engine have been greatly exaggerated.
Erica Simpson, Communications Specialist at Westport Innovations, says the company has no plans to discontinue production of its HPDI (high-pressure direct injection) engine, adding that as long as the demand was there, Westport would service it.
“As long as demand persists for (the 15 liter), we will ship to meet it,” she says. “And we are currently meeting demand.”
Simpson says Westport is in the development stages of its next generation HPDI engine and expects to unveil its “2.0” version later this year.
Simpson says NexGen development initiatives were aimed at sharing some of its HDPI technologies with vertically integrated OEMs.
Rumors that Westport planned to shutter production of its 15 liter natural gas power plant caught fire at the Natural Gas Vehicle Canada Conference in Toronto earlier this month.
According to Today’s Trucking, Trevor Fridfinnson, senior vice president of Bison Transport – one of Canada’s largest carriers – told the conference audience during a presentation that Westport’s days in the engine segment were coming to an end.
