The UPS employee who killed three co-workers at a UPS delivery hub in San Francisco Wednesday had recently filed a grievance report about working excessive overtime.
Jimmy Lam, 38, barged into a morning meeting around 9 a.m. and began shooting his co-workers before shooting and killing himself just as police arrived. In addition to killing three employees, he injured two others who have since been released from the hospital.
According to the Associated Press a Teamsters Union representing UPS employees reported that Lam filed a complaint in March about working too much overtime. It’s unclear if UPS ever addressed Lam’s complaint.
A representative with the Teamsters Union, Joseph Cilia, said he couldn’t explain why Lam would have shot his co-workers.
“I never knew Jimmy to not get along with people,” Cilia said. “Jimmy wasn’t a big complainer.”
Benson Louie, 50, Wayne Chan, 56, and Michael Lefiti, 46, were shot and killed by Lam. Police are still looking for a motive to explain why Lam chose to shoot his fellow drivers.
The UPS building in the Potrero Hill area was shut down for three hours following the shootings as law enforcement worked to secure and investigate the scene. The location is about 2 ½ miles from downtown San Francisco.
Two guns were found at the scene, including an assault-style handgun that Lam had been carrying at the time of his death.
