Wardrobe malfunction meet marketing malfunction.
An apparent goof by GM revealed too much too soon about its next-generation L5P 6.6-liter Duramax V8 diesel engine available in the 2017 Silverado 2500HD.
Scheduled to be revealed during the Texas State Fair, performance numbers on the engine were posted early on the GM Powertrain site where they were captured in a screen shot by Truck Trend. Though GM promptly removed the numbers, it’s still gotten plenty of attention on the web.
According to Chevy’s own numbers, its latest diesel dynamo offers up 445 horsepower at 2,800 rpm and 910 lb.ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm.
That puts the Bow Tie boss ahead of Ford’s 2017 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel by five horsepower, but 15 foot pounds behind Big Blue in peak torque. It’s a significant boost for Chevy considering that its 2016 Duramax is rated at 397 horsepower and 765 lb-ft of torque.
Ram, which once dominated the torque battle with 900 foot-pounds courtesy of a 385-hp, 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine, is now in third place—at least for now.
At the rate this is going, it won’t be long until 1,000 foot-pound stump pulling pickups become the new norm.
The Texas State Fair begins this Friday and lasts through Oct. 23 at Fair Park in Dallas.
