Ford Looks to Set Itself Apart With CNG/LPG 1/2-Tons
Remember when Ford decided to forego a diesel variant for their half-ton pickups? It seemed that they stood alone on the island of gas-only pickups.
Maybe that was because they were busy opening up the market with a CNG-powered F-150.
Ford is furthering the distance from their competitors and is offering the 2014 F-150 with a gaseous-fuel prep option, giving it the ability to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas.
If they weren’t unique before, they are now.
Ford will now be the only manufacturer with an available CNG/LPG capable half-ton pickup. The CNG pickup will be available this fall with a factory-installed, gaseous-fuel prep package that includes hardened valves, valve seats, pistons and rings so it can operate on either natural gas or gasoline through separate fuel systems.
It is capable of achieving more than 750 miles on one tank of gas, depending on the tank size selected. CNG sells for an average of $2.11 per gallon of gasoline equivalent.
Ford isn’t stopping there: Within the next year, they will have eight commercial vehicles equipped with a gaseous-prep option.
