Deutsche Post, a German package delivery company and subsidiary of DHL Group, has teamed up with Ford to produce all-electric Transit delivery vans.

Deutsche Post has already been producing smaller electric vans under its subsidiary StreetScooter. About 2,500 of the vans have been in use around Germany with plans to increase production to about 20,000 vehicles per year for sale around Europe.

Production of the electric Transit package delivery vehicle is expected to begin next month. At least 2,500 of the vans will be in use for urban deliveries before the end of next year. The vans will be fitted with a special body construction based on Deutsche Post and DHL Paket specs.

Both Deutsche Post DHL Group and Ford share the same objective of building future mobility by reducing emissions and creating new traffic solutions. Their partnership has resulted in the largest manufacturing venture of battery-powered medium-duty delivery vehicles in Europe.

“I consider this partnership another important boost for electro-mobility in Germany,” said Jürgen Gerdes, member of the executive board of the Deutsche Post AG. “This step emphasizes that Deutsche Post is an innovation leader. It will relieve the inner cities and increase the people’s quality of life. We will continue working on completely carbon neutral CO2-neutral logistics!”

Ford said the partnership aligns with their mobility goals.

“E-Mobility and innovative traffic solutions for urban areas are key focuses for us as we transform our business to meet future challenges,” said Steven Armstrong, group vice president and president Europe, Middle East and Africa, Ford Motor Company. “As the leader in commercial vehicles in Europe, this partnership plays perfectly to our strengths andin StreetScooter and the Deutsche Post DHL Group we have a partner with enormous competence and a worldwide network.”
