BYD’s electric T5 chassis cab truck has a range of 155 miles.BYD is now offering a long-range Class 5 electric truck that uses eco-friendly batteries.
The T5 chassis cab, which is built at BYD’s Lancaster, Calif. facility, has a GVWR of 16,100 pounds and a range of 155 miles.
The AC permanent magnet synchronous motor produces 201 horsepower and offers quick access to 406 lb. ft. of torque.
BYD reports that its proprietary iron-phosphate batteries contain no heavy metals or toxic electrolytes and can be recharged in as little as an hour and a half (480 volt A/C 3-phase at a charging rate of 100 kW; expect a 5-hour charge time at 40 kW).
If cycled every day, BYD says its batteries will still have 80 percent strength of charge after 5,000 cycles or 14 years.
A vehicle to grid system allows the truck to deliver power back to the grid, to a load or to another vehicle.
Given its range and top speed of 62mph, the T5 is ideal for metro use. Fewer moving parts, fewer fluids and regenerative braking, which reduces brake wear, provide the T5 with about $3,300 in yearly maintenance savings over its diesel counterpart, according to BYD.
Fuel savings are more impressive. If driven 100 miles per day for six days a week, the T5 will produce an annual fuel savings of $6,500.
