Maximum towing capacities take huge jump to lead all brands; trucks receive body design upgrades from the 2014 half-tons

Chevrolet and GMC revealed today the all-new 2015 models of the Silverado HD and Sierra HD full-size pickups.

Silverado HD’s all-new exterior communicates strength and capability, while also enhancing aerodynamics for improved efficiency and reduced wind noise. It also improves cooling for more consistent power.

GM claims “the highest payload – 7,374 pounds – and the highest conventional trailering rating – 19,600 pounds.” GM’s fifth-wheel maximum tow rating is 23,200 lbs.

The “conventional” qualifier means towing from the bumper with the factory-supplied receiver hitch.

(Chrysler Group’s Ram brand advertises a 30,000-lb. tow rating, but that’s using a fifth-wheel.)

While 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD and 2015 GMC Sierra HD models use essentially the same cab and beds as the 2014 1500 models.

The front ends have larger grilles with chrome trim and cooling intakes, a new hood and headlights, and chrome bumpers with corner steps in the rear.

Other changes increase reduced interior noise and increased egress/ingress thanks to the door/cab modifications pulled in from the 2014  half-tons.

GM gave no prices, but heavy-duty pickups start at about $30,000 for pure work models and can run to $70,000 or more for luxury versions.

The Sierra pickup will arrive in the first quarter of 2014, including 2500HD and 3500HD models, and the Sierra Denali HD.

The pickups will be assembled in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Flint, Michigan.
